Mentoring and Spiritual Disciplines

Updated February 2023

Spiritual disciplines that I connect with the most:

Prayer is something I've always had a problem with until I started writing my prayers in a journal. I will talk more about that later.

Bible Reading is something I am working on.  I've tried various methods, but this year I am working on the One Year Bible Plan and Revive our Hearts

Giving is something my husband and I do regularly. We give to two churches, 5 missionaries or missions groups, and a child in Haiti.

What my prayer life looks like is that I have a journal that I write my prayers in. I also have a guide to help me that I wrote myself. It helps me to pray for others and specific things in my life. I will share more about this later.

How I handle frustration with God - I remember that He is in control. I take my concerns to Him and let Him know how I feel. He already knows how I feel, but it helps me get my emotions in check.

What keeps me focused on Jesus is that I need to remember Him each minute in every circumstance. Nature reminds me of Him.  Hearing a beautiful song reminds me of Him.  Reading something someone wrote where they talk about Him reminds me of Him.  So many things!

How the enemy shows up in my life...oh my! That guy is there when I wish he was not.  I have strange dreams at night at times. Other times he is distracting me during the day, and I wish he would go away.  I am glad I have my Lord to rely on.

Staying accountable to others is something I am working on. I do not like letting others know that I am weak and need to be held up by their prayers.  But I do need this and I do need to stay accountable.

My heroes are Nancy Leigh DeMoss Wolgemuth of Revive Our Hearts, and Susannah Spurgeon. One quote I remember from Susannah's husband Charles, who said this as his aging wife endured much illness, ""Let every believer accept this as the inference of experience: that for most human maladies, the best relief and antidote will be found in self-sacrificing work for Jesus Christ."

Things I want to make sure my mentees know:

*God wants us to have a gentle and quiet spirit. A quiet spirit is one that has an absence of spiritual noise. a mindset of calmness, serenity, and tranquility. It’s being settled, steadfast, and peaceful. A quiet disposition is like a still, peaceful pool of water.

*Surrender your whole heart to Jesus. This means Jesus defines who you are—not your friends, the world, or even yourself.
